Virginia M. “Toots” Held, 92, Elkhorn, formerly Lyons, died peacefully on April 18, 2017, at Lakeland Health Care Center.
She was born May 26, 1924, in Spring Prairie, to the late Henry and Lorretta (Roanhouse) Schoenberg. She spent her early life in Spring Prairie where she attended St. Joseph’s School in Lyons.
On May 29, 1943, she married LeRoy Frank Held. They made their home in Lyons where they raised their family. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 2000.
Toots was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Lyons. She was active with St. Rita’s Sodality and enjoyed bowling on a league. She worked at Jay’s Manufacturing and Stowell’s Catering. She enjoyed playing cards (especially euchre), socializing with her friends and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Karen Schatzman, Florida, Kathy (Peter) Fischer, Florida, Pam Cattani, Burlington, Patty (Brian) Simon, Lyons, and Thomas (Arlene) Held, Burlington; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her brothers, LaVern “Bud” Schoenberg and Harold (Mary) Schoenberg.
She was further preceded in death by her son, Ken Held, and sister-in-law, Florence Schoenberg.
The family would like to thank Dr. Garth Schneider and the nurses and staff at Lakeland Health Care Center for their wonderful care and compassion.
Services are Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on May 20, from noon until the time of the service. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is serving the family.
