LOUIS R. KARRAKER


Louis Rendleman Karraker, 84, Waterford, died March 20, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 2, 1927, in Jonesboro, Ill., to the late Ira Oliver and Elsie Karraker.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Lake Champlain. Later, he started his career as a professor of U.S. History at Augustana College after working toward his PH.D. He went into business with careers at Parker Pen and American Appraisal where he served as Chief Operating Officer for a number of years. He then returned to academia as business manager at Concordia Lutheran College, Ann Arbor, Mich.

After retiring, he had a newspaper column entitled “The Conservative View” and had an avid interest in politics and religion while enjoying discussions and debates on both topics. He enjoyed watching sports and listening to music. He and Pat had been faithful and active members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for 20 years and had loved their retirement in Waterford.

Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years; son, Alan (Kirsten); daughter, Sharon (Craig) Cohen; grandchildren, Kelsey, Austin, Kevin, Jeffrey and Lauren.

Funeral services were March 24, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Waterford. Burial was in the church cemetery following services. Mealy Funeral Home, Inc., Waterford, served the family.

In lieu of floral expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Waterford, in memory of Louis Karraker are suggested.
