Gooseberries employee charged with stealing nearly $55,000

A former cashier manager at Gooseberries Fresh Market, Burlington, has been accused of stealing nearly $55,000 from the Burlington grocery store.

Jamie L. Szarfinski, 47, was charged in Racine County Circuit Court last month with theft in a business setting of between $10,000 and $100,000. The actual amount of the alleged theft is $54,496.90.

She made her initial court appearance Tuesday, but the proceeding was adjourned until April 9 to give Szarfinski time to hire a lawyer.

The complaint against her was filed March 11 and an arrest warrant was issued March 28 after she failed to appear in court for a scheduled proceeding.

According to the criminal complaint, the owner of Gooseberries began investigating the matter after he was informed by his accountant of suspicious transactions.

That investigation uncovered a series of transactions that occurred between Sept. 7 and Dec. 9, 2018, in which items were logged as being returned to the store, but the money that was refunded was not recorded, the complaint contends.
