In this week’s Standard Press…

      It has been 64 years since Burlington had a brewery and that long, thirsty drought will end in 2020 if a local family succeeds in its plan to open a microbrewery and taproom in a prominent downtown building.

Project spokesperson Patrick Sullivan announced the plans this week to convert the former headquarters for the Burlington Standard Press at 700 N. Pine Street into the microbrewery.

Tim Sullivan, Patrick’s brother who currently works for Ecliptic Brewing in Portland, Oregon, will be the brewmaster.

  • STANDING PAT: The City of Burlington Common Council on Tuesday held firm to its decision to grant a five-year exemption to a local business from a mandate to install an accessible restroom despite pressure from a Wisconsin-based civil rights organization.
  • SCHOLAR-ATHLETE: Balancing a heavy workload of advanced placement classes, racing to athletic competitions and staying involved in extracurricular can present a challenge for any student. But the hard work paid off for Burlington High School senior Malik Tiedt who was named a Wisconsin Interscholastic Association Scholar Athlete this week.
  • ALCOHOL AT SENIOR CENTER: The City of Burlington could allow alcohol beverages at the Burlington Senior Activity Center. The proposal, which is expected to go before the Common Council for approval on May 21, only pertains to a partnership between the Senior Center and Daniels Family Funeral Home, which would host life celebrations at the center.
  • RIVAL VANQUISHED: Burlington senior Trent Turzenski struck out 11 batters, and the Demons survived a late Waterford rally Tuesday night. The visiting Demons jumped out with three runs in the first and hung on for a 4-2 victory in Southern Lakes Conference action.
