School officials in the Waterford Graded School District are proposing a small accessory building for the Fox River Middle School property.

It would be used to enhance classroom activities and offerings through the local recreation department and also be available for this summer’s Hot Air Balloon Festival.

Ken Quandt, WGSD director of buildings and grounds, brought the proposal before the Village of Waterford’s Plan Commission March 21.

The proposal calls for putting an accessory building – described as an open-air pavilion – on a 26-by-32-foot concrete slab adjacent to the school, 921 W. Main St.

Quandt said the pavilion would be ideal for activities offered through the WGSD recreation department, as well as the schools’ outdoor nature classes.

Village plan commissioners did not take action on the WGSD request because it had been accidentally omitted from the agenda. But since a public hearing on the matter had been placed on the agenda, Quandt was able to present his proposal.

No objections were raised March 21 either by commissioners or residents.

A final decision is expected to be made by members of the Plan Commission at their next meeting later this month.

“For all intents and purposes, I don’t think you need to worry about your planning process,” commented Village President Tom Roanhouse, who also chairs the Plan Commission.

Quandt said the school district’s timeline calls for construction to begin immediately after school lets out on June 11.

“I don’t want any equipment around while the kids are still in school,” Quandt explained.

The goal, Quandt said, is to have the pavilion construction completed by late July to accommodate the second annual Hot Air Balloon Festival that is being held on the school grounds.
