With a lot of the squad’s younger athletes participating due to spring break, head coach Dan Luneau was pleased with the ninth-place finish by his Burlington High School girls’ track and field team at the Franklin Saber Indoor Invitational held Saturday at UW-Parkside.

The Demon girls tallied 27 points in the 13-team event, which was won by Whitnall with 83 points.

Kaysie Shebeneck had the best finish for the Demons throwing the shot put 34 feet, 4 inches to finish second in that event.

“Hopefully some big things will come from her if she keeps throwing like that,” Luneau said.

Shebeneck also placed in the high jump, clearing 4-06, which was good enough for sixth place.

Luneau noted that both the high jump and shot put were taking place at the same time, so Shebeneck had to go back and forth between them.

Stephanie Sima finished third in the pole vault, clearing 7-06.

“Stephanie got a chance to compete in a varsity meet and did pretty well,” Luneau said.

One other strong finish was turned in by the 3,200-meter relay team. Michelle Kleitsch, Aleigha Barry, Caitlin Yonash and Coriann Dorgay teamed up to finish second in a time of 10:57.26.

Kleitsch also finished seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:43.02.

Burlington’s boys finished 12th out of 15 teams with 18 points. Kenosha Tremper won the boys’ event with 80 points.

Max Shenkenberg accounted for seven of the team’s points with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (10-06) and a sixth-place finish in the triple jump (40-10.5).

Ross Canales and Skyler Vandusseldorp both cleared 5-10 in the high jump, with Canales finishing in a three-way tie for fourth and Vandusseldorp placing seventh.

Other boys scoring team points were Matt Gierhan (sixth in the 400, 53.11), Finn Finucane (eighth, 1,600, 4:46.62) and the 4×800 relay team (eighth).

Next up for both squads is the Milwaukee Lutheran Invitational on Saturday, April 14.

The Southern Lakes Conference Relays will take place at Delavan-Darien on Monday, April 16.
