The Union Grove High School girls’ volleyball team improved to 5-1 in Southern Lakes Conference action with a straight-set win over Lake Geneva Badger Tuesday. Badger is 0-6 in the SLC.

The Bronco girls had no trouble with Badger, defeating them 25-8, 25-18, 25-10.

Team leaders in this match were Kassidy Jo Wilks with 25 assists; and Wilks, Savannah Kohlhagen, Bailey Johnson and Katrina O’Keefe with seven kills each.

It was senior night for the team. For Wilks, Amanda Hoegsted, Michelle Kupper, O’Keefe and Johnson, it was their last opportunity to play before the home fans.

“All seniors started and finished together,” noted head coach Sarah Busalacchi. “They did really well.”

It was tough going for the Bronco girls at the Catholic Central High School Invite Saturday. The team finished 2-2 overall, losing to Catholic Central and Waterford, while defeating Fort Atkinson and Williams Bay.

“We were down like two starters and had two girls sick,” noted Busalacchi. “It just kind of threw us for a loop.”

The Broncos began the day taking on Catholic Central, the No. 1-ranked team in Division 4. After winning the opening game 25-23, they dropped the next two games 25-16, 15-10.

The girls rebounded with a three-set win over Fort Atkinson, winning the first game 25-21, but dropping the second game 25-23. They won the rubber match 15-6.

By far the easiest match of the day came in the third round with the win over Williams Bay 25-16, 25-18.

The day ended with a match against Waterford, a team the Broncos had defeated earlier this season in five sets. This time, the Wolverines won.

Waterford won the opening set 25-18, but the Broncos seemed to take control with an easy 25-8 win in the second set. They were unable to maintain the momentum, though, losing 15-10 in the third set.

Wilks led Union Grove in assists with 55.

Ashley Olsen led the team in kills with 25, with Kohlhagen adding 23, and Wilks 12.

In digs, Cassy Goodrich led the Broncos with 31.

The Bronco girls will be at Westosha Central on Tuesday, Oct. 11, in an SLC matchup.

The regular season ends with the SLC Meet on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Delavan-Darien.
