Broncos come up short at Burlington

Union Grove girls soccer coach Gregg Anderle gave credit to Burlington in a 3-1 BHS win April 26, but Anderle also made a point about his own team.

“Burlington was the better team … but for us it was a tale of two halves,” Anderle said. “In the first half, we played sluggishly and got caught in a more direct game with Burlington.

“They are far better than us in that style of play,” he added. “I counted only two 50/50 balls that we came away with in the first half.

“In the second half, we settled down a bit and for a 15-minute stretch between the 60th and 75th minute, Burlington was back on its heels and we were playing creative soccer,” he finished. “We need to be more consistent and come out hard.”

Anderle credited Anna Rees for a strong game in the back, while he praised Katie Michel and Liz Dujua for a “fine job” in the midfield.

The Broncos’ lone goal came in the second half on a 20-yard shot from Riley Mayer.

“Riley had a great look at the net and put a beautiful shot in,” Anderle said.

He also said freshmen Olivia Wilde, Holli Grajera and Caitlyn Obernberger played well in the second half.

“We need to fix a few problems this week and have some decisive wins to build momentum going into the (Racine) County Tournament at Case,” he added.

Results from Union Grove’s game against Westosha Central at the Central tournament Tuesday were unavailable by press deadline.

The Broncos opened at the County Tournament with a 5:30 p.m. game against Racine Park Friday.
