The Burlington High School boys volleyball team knew it was playing for the Southeast Conference title Monday night, and knew it would be a battle.

In a match that went back and forth all evening, the Demons fell in five sets to the Franklin Sabers, 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 15-10.

Burlington dropped to 4-2 in the SEC, while Franklin improved to 6-0.

“In hindsight, it was two very evenly-matched clubs,” said coach Tim Gesteland. “They’re almost a mirror of us.

“Just a few things here or there could have swayed either of us,” he added. “It’s a game of inches. They outmaneuvered us in that fifth game.”

It was another balanced attack for the Demons, with Nolan Rueter posting 18 kills, Eric Gerber 13, Carson Biedrzycki 12 and Joey Gesteland nine.
