St. Catherine’s hands volleyball team first loss

After winning their first 10 matches of the season, the Union Grove girls’ volleyball team was handed its first loss Saturday at The Prairie School Invitational.

Racine St. Catherine’s bested the Bronco girls 25-19, 25-21 in the semifinals of the invitational after the Broncos had won all three of their opening matches.

Union Grove opened with an easy 25-13, 25-6 victory over Wauwatosa East, and followed that up with a 25-20, 25-8 win over Martin Luther.

The third match was much closer, but the Broncos pulled out a two-set win over Racine Park 26-24, 25-22.

Savannah Kohlhagen led the team with 37 kills. Rachael Peterson led the team in assists with 42 and in ace serves with eight.

Cassidy Kortendick produced four block kills and Cassy Goodrich had 11 digs.

The Broncos had defeated St. Catherine’s two days earlier at their own quad Aug. 23 by scores of 27-26 and 25-22 in the process of going 3-0 in matches.

In the other two matches, Union Grove defeated Racine Horlick 27-26, 25-20, and Racine Case 25-5, 25-18.

“We had some huge wins and great defense, as well as offense,” head coach Sarah Busalacchi said.

Peterson had 42 assists, with Melissa Gramza adding 22. Gramza also had five digs.

Kylie Wilks produced 30 kills, with Kohlhagen adding 20 and Ashley Olsen 12.

Kortendick had seven block kills, while Wilks added seven ace serves.

Union Grove hosted Westosha Central in a key Southern Lakes Conference matchup on Thursday.

Next week, they will travel to Lake Geneva for an SLC match with Badger on Thursday, Sept. 6.

On Saturday, Sept. 8, the girls will participate in the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Classic in Jackson.
