The Burlington High School girls volleyball team didn’t play poorly Saturday at the Brookfield Central Invite.

It just didn’t play at its best – and ran into a hot opponent.

After sweeping through three opponents in pool play at the invite, the Demons fell to eventual champion East Troy 13-25, 25-20, 15-10 in the quarterfinals.

“East Troy is very talented,” said co-head coach Teri Leach. “They caused a lot of our difficulties in our loss.

“We did not have a strong week last week with practices or our match against Westosha,” she added. “When you don’t play with 100 percent effort all the time, it is difficult to try to crank it up to 100 percent because it is needed to win.”

Leach went on to say the Demons played flat for most of the day, but thought her team learned a valuable lesson.

“Talent alone can win some matches, but onviously not all the time,” she said. “There are so many talented teams in this state that we will continue to see in tournaments every weekend, that if we take any time off, especially practices, we can expect to take more losses.”

Senior Ciara Capezio led the Demons with 31 kills, while Quinn Spieker added 18 and Phoebe Hozeska 17. Kaysie Shebeneck had 76 assists, 10 digs and four kills, while Morgan Longoria had 17 digs, Spieker 16 and Capezio 14.

In Southern Lakes Conference play last week, the Demons held on against Westosha Central for a 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11 victory.

Capezio led the team with 15 kills, but Spieker added 14 and Ali Rueter eight kills, four assists and four digs.

Shebeneck had 33 assists, 10 digs and three kills, while Longoria had 26 digs and two service aces.

Burlington recovered Tuesday by routing Union Grove, 25-10, 25-12, 25-17.

Nine of Burlington players had at least one kills, led by 16 from Capezio (who hit .333 for the match) and Rueter with six.

Shebeneck had 32 assists, 11 digs, four aces and three kills, while Longoria had a team-best 16 digs.
