Competing against some tough teams at the Laser Relays Saturday at Naga-Waukee Park in Hartland, the Burlington High School boys and girls cross country teams finished ninth and 10th, respectively, among 12 teams in Division 1.

“Earning medals, among top-notch competition, were Mickael Pauly and Brittany Ehlen,” head coach Rick Koceja said. “Both continue to be strong lead runners.”

Pauly led the Demon boys with a 15th-place finish in 16 minutes 58.17 seconds. That was his first time this season below 17 minutes.

The Demon girls were led by Ehlen’s 29th-place finish in 16:22.44.

Besides Pauly, other Burlington boys who competed were Zach Wawrzyniakowski in 18:06.65, Nathaniel Sibley in 18:25.76, Conor Schultz in 18:59.31 and Ben Lois in 18:59.62.

Koceja noted that Schultz broke 19 minutes “for the first time on a slow, wet course.”

Shaun Weber was the sixth Demon boy. He was clocked in 23:20.67.

Waukesha South won the boys’ event with 66 points. Burlington tallied 374.

Aleigha Barry was the second-fastest Demon girl. She was clocked in 17:01.94, more than one-half minute behind Ehlen.

Next was Meta Ehlen in 17:31.92, then Molly Benavides in 18:13.11, Hannah Peterson in 18:14.41 and Marah Zinnen in 18:40.85.

As a team, Burlington had 382 points in the competition won by Waukesha West with 91 points.

Next up is the Chocolate City Invite that Burlington hosts at the St. Francis Retreat Center on Saturday. The girls varsity race starts at 9:40 a.m. and the boys at 10:20 a.m.

Sixteen teams, including several state-ranked squads, will be competing.
