With a lifetime best time of 15 minutes 48.02 seconds, Union Grove’s Madelyn Schwartz finished ninth overall among 170 runners at the Laser Relays held Saturday at Naga-Waukee Park in Hartland.

“That was a 24-second personal record for her,” head coach Kyle Patoka said, adding that he believes she can run a sub-15:30.

“It was cold, wet, rainy,” Patoka said. “She likes running in that kind of weather.”

The 22-team invitational was divided into two divisions, with Union Grove competing in Division 2.

In that division, both Bronco squads finished eighth out of 10 teams.

Anna Peterson finished nearly two minutes behind Schwartz in 17:35.87 (84th overall), with Lexi Marsh another 20 seconds back in 17:55.99. Both were PRs.

Five Bronco girls ran in the 18 minutes, with McKenna Chriske clocked in 18:19.68, Brianna DeBrabander in 18:26.17, Ashley Paulick in 18:27.29, Savannah Patzen in 18:37.83 and Whitney Vieau in 18:43.66.

The best finish for a Bronco boy was 64th, with Bailey Davis claiming that spot with a time of 18:00.57.

“He was shooting to get into the 17s,” Patoka said. “He just missed it by the skin of his teeth.”

Two other Bronco boys turned in times under 19 minutes. They were Sam Schaefer at 18:47.52 and Luke Johnson at 18:59.36.

Logan Kohlhagen, at 19:26.26, was the only Bronco in the 19-minute range, with four others clocked under 21 minutes.

They were Kyle Martinez (20:27.33), Tommy Ruge (20:32.18), Ben Rossman (20:34.71) and Bret Wolter (20:43.21).

In the team competition, Whitefish Bay won the boys’ Division Two event with 154 points, and also won the girls event with 57 points.

Both squads competed in The Prairie School Invitational on Thursday at Armstrong Park in Racine.

Next up is the Chocolate City Invite at St. Francis Retreat Center, Burlington, on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Next week, the Bronco runners will compete in the Wolverine Invite at Waterford High School on Friday, Oct. 5.
