Standouts for the week of Oct. 5, 2012

Male Athlete of the Week

Nick Bartlett, Burlington High School boys volleyball: Playing arch-rival Westosha Central last week, the BHS boys wanted to make a statement.

Bartlett ended up being a huge part of that, as the Demons won the match 25-17, 25-18, 25-10 at Burlington Sept. 27.

Bartlett, whose jump serving has been getting attention all season, served seven aces, but also had two critical 10-point runs on his serve in the second and third games.

Bartlett had six kills to go with his seven aces in the match.

Also considered: Jayden Essman, Burlington High School football; Hanson Olson and Kolin Schuerman, Burlington High School boys soccer.

Female Athletes of the Week

Alyssa Helwig and Bridget Brockmann, Waterford Union High School girls tennis: The No. 1 doubles team from Waterford put the cap on a successful Southern Lakes Conference season last week.

With the end of the SLC tournament delayed because of weather, Helwig and Brockmann took the court Sept. 24 with a shot at the SLC No. 1 doubles crown. They defeated Delavan-Darien’s Sam Hoyord and Kylie Bliss of Delavan-Darien – the No. 1 seeds in the tournament – 6-4, 6-3 for the title.

The team also won their opening match at Monday’s WIAA Division 1 subsectional and advanced to Wednesday’s sectional. No information about that match was available before press deadline.

Also considered: Kelly Gould, Catholic Central High School girls volleyball; Madelyn Schwartz, Union Grove Union High School cross country.

Team of the Week

Burlington High School boys football: With a chance to move within one win of a playoff berth, the BHS football team unrolled an awesome offensive performance at Wilmot Friday night.

The Demons finished with 551 yards of total offense, including 315 on the ground in a 31-18 win over the Panthers.

Quarterback Jayden Essman completed 14 of 19 passes for 236 yards, throwing one touchdown and running for another. Chad Redmer rushed for 196 yards on 28 carries, while Essman ran for 58 yards on 10 carries.

Redmer also had three receptions for 83 yards, Ty Dennis six for 77 yards and Kasey Solofra six for 76 yards.

Brian Dankle hit a 19-yards field goal for the Demons, and just missed on a 45-yard attempt as well.

Also considered: The Union Grove Union High School girls tennis team.

Romo Watch

It’s safe to say Dallas Cowboys quarterback and BHS graduate Tony Romo couldn’t have been happy with his performance on Monday Night Football this week.

While Romo threw for 307 yards, he managed just one touchdown. He also threw five interceptions and finished with a quarterback rating of just 14.2.

Two of Romo’s interceptions were returned for touchdowns by the Chicago Bears, who won 34-18.

It’s homecoming week for the Burlington High School football team, as the Demons host Elkhorn Friday night at 7 p.m.
