Lady ’Toppers take second at MCC tourney

The Catholic Central High School girls volleyball team made sure it did its home crowd proud Saturday in hosting the Metro Classic Conference volleyball tournament.

The Lady ’Toppers pushed Racine St. Catherine’s to three sets before falling in the championship, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9.

CCHS improved to 30-9 overall on the season, and remained on top of the coaches poll in Division 4. St. Cat’s is ranked fourth in Division 3.

“It was really nice to see the team finish the season strong,” said coach MaeMae Oberhofer. “We came out, we won game one. We had a nice lead in game two.

“They just had a server come up and do a nice job.”

The Lady ’Toppers 1-2 punch of Megan Wadsworth and Maggie Smith came through again, with Wadsworth finishing with 34 kills and Smith with 24.

Senior setter Kelly Gould had 66 assists, four aces and five block assists, while Smith added six aces, five solo blocks and 28 digs and Wadsworth 35 digs.

Ali Wiemer added 21 digs and Brittany Martin 17 in the tournament, while Monica Litman also had four aces.

The Lady ’Toppers wrapped up the MCC regular season Oct. 9 with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-11 win at home over Shoreland Lutheran.

Smith led the team with 14 kills, while Wadsworth and Litman added five kills each.

Smith finished with 16 digs and Gould 13.

The Lady ’Toppers dominated Rio to open the WIAA Division 4 playoffs Tuesday night, winning 25-12, 25-8, 25-5.

“We came out and did our job,” said Oberhofer. “We did our job and were efficient, and that’s what we wanted to do in our first round of the postseason.”

Sarah Gould had seven aces, while Kelly Gould 29 assists. Wiemer had 12 digs and Martin nine, while Smith had 11 kills and Wadsworth 10, while Abby Tweet had five.
