Swimming against some of the top teams in the state Saturday, the Burlington co-op swim team managed to hold its own at the Homestead Highlander Invite.

Burlington finished 12th of the 23 teams at the invite. Final team scores were not available.

Burlington coach Denita Jones said the large meet made for a long day – some events had more than 100 swimmers entered – but her team performed well.

“That was very long, and the top teams in the state were there,” she said. “Taking 12th overall, I thought we did pretty well.”

The squad was led by senior Serena Wanasek, who finished sixth in the 200 free in 1:58.05 and fifth in the 500 free in 5:13.75.

Those were the only two medals for the team, though there were other notable finishes.

Sara Wanasek finished 18th in the 200 free in 2:02.86, and was 11th in the 500 free in 5:23.76.

In addition, two of Burlington’s relays finished 11th.

The 200 freestyle relay of Sara, Serena and Olivia Wanasek and Hannah Mayer took 11th in 1:47.03, while the 400 free relay of the three Wanasek sisters and Ellie Petrie was 11th in 3:53.53.

Jones noted that a number of swimmers posted season-best times, even though the team has not yet begun its taper.

The squad is at the Racine Invite Saturday, and then will begin the postseason.

“Hopefully, we’ll fare well through all this,” Jones said.

On Tuesday, Burlington dropped a 105-65 decision to Badger at Badger.

Jones said she was forced to rearrange her lineup three times because of various swimmers coming up ill.

“Considering everything, I thought we did quite well,” she said.

Sara Wanasek won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.19 and was second in the 500 free in 5:32.76, while Serena Wanasek won the 100 free in 54.08 and was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.56.

Olivia Wanasek added the final individual win, taking the 100 backstroke in 1:06.12, with teammate Ellie Petrie following in second in 1:07.77.

The 200 free relay edged out Badger by .05 seconds, as Hannah Mayer and the Wanasek sisters swam to a time of 1:44.31.
