As expected, the Union Grove High School girls volleyball team took third at the Southern Lakes Conference Tournament Saturday at Union Grove.

Burlington, the No. 1-ranked team in the state according to the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association Week Seven Poll, won the SLC crown, defeating Westosha Central, the No. 6-ranked team in the state, in the SLC finals match in straight sets.

The Bronco girls, the No. 3 seed, lost their opening game 25-13 to Wilmot, the No. 6 seed, but came back to win the next two games 25-21 and 25-22.

In the opening round, the winning team needed to win just two sets.

That pitted Union Grove against Westosha Central in the semifinal match. The Broncos played the Falcons tough, but lost in straight sets 25-19, 25-21, 25-23.

In the third-place match, the Bronco girls faced Elkhorn, the No. 4 seeded team.

Union Grove won the first two sets 25-17 and 26-24, but the Elks took the third set 27-25. The Broncos turned things around in the fourth set, earning a 25-18 victory for third place.

Senior setter Rachael Peterson had 114 assists in the three matches.

Three Broncos had 30 or more kills, with sophomore outside hitter Savannah Kohlhagen leading the way with 37. Freshman outside hitter Kylie Wilks had 36 kills, while senior right side hitter Ashley Olsen contributed 30.

Wilks led the team in digs with 18, with junior libero Cassy Goodrich adding 15.

The Broncos began postseason regional action Thursday when the girls hosted Milwaukee Ronald Reagan High School.
