Standouts for the Week of Oct. 21, 2011

Male Athlete of the Week

Greg Steffens

Greg Steffens, Waterford Union High School football: Steffens may have only scored once Friday night, but that one touchdown counts for more when it’s the only score of the game.

Steffens scored from one yard out in the second overtime, as Waterford edged out Lake Geneva Badger 7-0 to clinch a tie for the Southern Lakes Conference championship.

Steffens finished the game with 55 yards rushing on 55 carries. Badger finished with 254 yards of total offense, but had three touchdowns called back on penalties.

Also considered: J.J. Ehlers, Waterford Union High School football.

Female Athlete of the Week

Emily Gomez

Emily Gomez, Burlington co-op swim team: Gomez, a senior, posted two of Burlington’s best finishes at the Waukesha South Invite Saturday.

Swimming against some of the top teams in the state, Gomez finished in the top 10 in both of her individual events – sixth in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.04, and fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.54.

Gomez also swam on the ninth-place 200 medley relay and the third-place 400 freestyle relay.

Also considered: Casey Roberts, Burlington High School girls volleyball; Britte Schneider, Catholic Central High School girls volleyball.

Team of the Week

The Burlington High School and Union Grove Union High School girls volleyball team: Both squads achieved milestones Saturday in finishing first and second, respectively, at the Southern Lakes Conference tournament at Delavan-Darien High School.

For the second straight year, Burlington won the title without losing a set in the tournament – even though it had a handful of injured players. The Demons used a balanced attack, with several players finishing in double-digit kills – Cassidy Robers, Kaysie Shebeneck, Bridget Vos, Emma Ketterhagen, Katie Drohner and Mackenzie Schneider.

Additionally, both Casey Roberts and Shebeneck were solid in setting the ball.

For the Broncos, even losing to Burlington in straight sets in the final couldn’t dim the accomplishment of beating Westosha Central in the semifinals. Union Grove got contributions not only from standout senior setter Jo Wilks, but offensively from Ashley Olsen, Olivia Wilde, Bailey Johnson, Michelle Kupper and Savannah Kohlhagen.

The Broncos also did a good job blocking and playing back-row defense.

Romo watch

Romo and the Dallas Cowboys fell to New England Patriots, 20-16, giving up a touchdown in the closing minute to the Patriots.

Romo finished the game 27 of 41 passing for 317 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Game of the Week

After all the drama of waiting out a lawsuit, the WIAA football playoff brackets were announced Tuesday, including Shorewood/Messmer – which won the lawsuit against the WIAA to participate in this year’s playoffs.

Just two area teams will be participating in the playoffs – Waterford Union High School and Catholic Central High School.

Waterford will host Greenfield in a Level 1 Division 2 game Friday at 7 p.m., while Catholic Central will travel to Randolph for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.

Also this weekend, area cross country squads will compete for the chance to go to state. Burlington, Union Grove and Waterford will compete in the Horlick Division 1 sectional starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, while Catholic Central will compete in the Division 3 sectional at Parkside Saturday starting at noon.
