Union Grove High School sophomore Madelyn Schwartz made the Southern Lakes All-Conference first team by finishing third at the SLC Meet Saturday at UW-Parkside.

“Madelyn had her best race of the season,” noted head coach Sara Shefchik. “The goal was to focus on the last mile of the race and really stay strong mentally and finish the race. She did that.”

“That race tells me she has the physical strength to qualify for state,” Shefchik added. “She hung right in the mix with some very talented conference rivals and beat three more girls that had beat her at conference relays a few weeks ago. I am proud to have such a competitor on my team.”

Schwartz turned in a time of 16 minutes 22.2 seconds over the 4K course.

In addition, Shefchik spoke of the improvement made by two of her freshmen who are knocking time off their personal bests.

Anna Peterson, by virtue of her 38th place finish in 18:06.7, made the honorable mention all-conference category.

The other freshman who continues to improve is Savannah Patzen. Patzen placed 40th with a time of 18:34.6.

Filling the No. 4 spot on the Bronco girls’ squad was junior Erika Peterson who finished 41st in 18:45.8.

Freshman Brooke Henningfield was the No. 5 Bronco runner in 19:04.5 (44th).

The Bronco boys finished fifth out of eight teams with 149 points. Westosha Central was the winning squad with 31 points.
