With their leading gymnast from last season no longer at Waterford High School due to a move, the Wolverine gymnastics squad will have to look elsewhere for its leading scorers.

Still, the team has 17 gymnasts out for the team – nearly doubling the number from a year ago.

Last season, Waterford was led by sophomore Grace Kubiak. This year, team leaders will be seniors Samantha Jahnke and Corey Pfankuch.

“They are always positive and motivating in the gym,” head coach Carrie Buelow said, adding that Jahnke is looking really strong.

“We have eight new freshmen who have joined the team,” Buelow noted.

In addition to the freshmen, the team will include five sophomores, one junior and three seniors.

Returning letterwinners are Jahnke, senior Sandra Kinzer, junior Alexis Walkowski, and sophomores Ambria Noll and Kayla Wisowaty.

“Although the team is young, I am looking forward to watch the girls improve through the season as they get more experience at the high school level,” Buelow said. “We have a couple of new kids who have joined the team who are really talented.”

Two of those are sisters, Lauren Dziak and Samantha Dziak. Lauren is a freshmen and Samantha a sophomore.

Last year, Waterford was 3-2 in the Southern Lakes Conference, and advanced to state where the team finished eighth overall.
