A 50-40 win Tuesday over Racine Lutheran at home evened the Union Grove High School boys basketball teams season record at 2-2. It also broke a mini two-game losing streak.

Racine Lutheran jumped out to a 14-10 lead after one period, largely on the strength of eight points from Clay Stevens.

The Broncos held Stevens to just two points in the second quarter, and Racine Lutheran to just five points, while tallying 15 themselves, to take a 25-19 lead at the half.

Besides holding Stevens to two points, Union Grove switched to a 1-3-1 zone which gave them some momentum. Several turnovers led to a couple of quick baskets for the Broncos.

Union Grove still led by five – 34-29 – after three quarters, and then put the game away with a 16-11 margin in the final period.

Stevens led all scorers with 20 points, but had just two total points in the second and third quarters.

“Cody Walters did a good job on him,” head coach David Pettit said.

The Bronco boys had three players in double figures.

Union Grove was led by Alex Hale with 12 points, with Brad Ostrowski and Cody Walters scoring 10 each.

“We’re hard to figure out offensively because you never know where the points are coming from,” Pettit said.

The game was won at the free-throw line, with the Broncos sinking 16 of 20 for 80 percent. Ostrowski led Union Grove in this category, making all six of his attempts. Racine Lutheran was 4 for 8.

In the decisive fourth quarter when Racine Lutheran was fouling to try to get back into the game, the Bronco boys sank 11 of 15 foul shots.

Union Grove had eight players score in this game.
