In their first dual meet of the season, the Waterford High School gymnastics team dropped a 121.80-115.125 decision to Westosha Central Monday night at home.

“This was a great meet to get the nerves out and get competition experience before the Emerald (Classic),” head coach Carrie Buelow said. “All the girls were very focused throughout the meet and we will continue to improve as the gymnasts get more comfortable with competition and add in their new skills.”

Sophomore Samantha Dziak and freshman Rachel Szeklinski took second and third in the all-around competition. Dziak scored a 31.200 to finish just .55 points behind the all-around leader, Sydney Rau of Westosha Central. Szeklinski scored a 28.100.

“Dziak and Szeklinski have never competed at the high school level, so it was exciting to see them do so well in the all-around,” Buelow said.

Samantha’s younger sister, Lauren, a freshman, was fourth in the all-around with a 28.075.

The best the Wolverine girls did in any event was the floor exercise where Sam Dziak was second (8.275) and Samantha Jahnke third (7.900). Dziak also took second in the balance beam with an 8.125.
