The Catholic Central High School girls basketball team opened the new year with a solid performance Friday night, winning its first game of the season by defeating Faith Christian 61-26.

The non-conference game, played in Burlington, snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Lady ’Toppers and likely gave the team some confidence as it heads into a tough portion of the schedule.

“This was a total team effort,” said coach Jeff Behrens. “Nine of the 10 players dressed scored tonight. We’ve worked real hard in practice on our shooting and tonight we went 21 of 53 from the field.”

The Lady ’Toppers also improved significantly in another area that has hurt them – turnovers.

“We only turned the ball over 10 times,” said Behrens. “That is less than half of what we’ve been doing so far this season.”

Catholic Central has been steady on defense for the most part all season, but took it to another level against Faith Christian. CCHS registered 22 steals and limited the Eagles to just 26 shots from the field – just six of which went in the basket (three from 3-point range).

Catholic Central took control from the opening tip-off and ran out to a 9-2 first quarter lead and stretched it to 27-13 at halftime. A 21-4 Lady ’Toppers fourth quarter advantage sealed the rout.

Kelsey Robers led Catholic Central with 18 points, while Sophie Foote added 17.
