Wolverines score close dual win over Broncos

It was a dual that could have gone either way, but the Waterford High School wrestling team got two big wins in close matches, and came away with a 42-34 victory over Union Grove Jan. 3 at Union Grove.

The two big victories came at 170 pounds and at 182 pounds.

At 170, Dylan Malecki got a takedown in overtime to grab a 4-2 victory over Union Grove’s Tate Koester.

At 182, Liam Pritchard built a 12-6 lead and then held on for a 14-12 decision over Jack McCann.

The Wolverines won eight of the 14 matches to even their Southern Lakes Conference dual mark at 2-2. The boys are 8-8 overall.

Waterford’s other six victories all came by pin.

Justin Ratkovec pinned Blake Hansen in two minutes 27 seconds at 106. D. J. Mcgilvary got a pin in 39 seconds over Kyle Kastenson at 113.

Ross Soens pinned Tanner Johnson in 1:36 at 126 pounds, and Kody Azarian pinned Zach Rasmussen in 2:07 at 132.

At 145 pounds, Max Fisher got a pin in 4:27 over Thurston Lovell, and at 160, Cody Nannemann pinned Riley Mann in 1:17.

Five of the six matches the Wolverines lost also were by pin, with the sixth loss coming by major decision.

Waterford traveled to Delavan-Darien to take on the No. 10-ranked (according to Crossface) Comets on Thursday.

On Saturday, the Wolverines will participate in the Badger Invitational at Lake Geneva.

Next week, they will host Badger on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. in a make-up dual from Dec. 20.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, the boys will compete in the Fort Atkinson Invitational.
