After one quarter at West Allis Hale Tuesday, things were looking pretty good for the Union Grove High School boys basketball team. That all changed in the second and third quarters, as Hale outscored the Bronco boys 47-23 on their way to a 66-49 defeat of Union Grove.

Andrew Kazikowski, Union Grove’s leading scorer, had 15 points in this game, but although 10 Broncos scored in this game, no one else was in double figures.

Union Grove led 15-8 after one quarter, but things turned sour in the second quarter as West Allis Hale took a 29-24 halftime lead.

The third-quarter saw the slide continue for the Broncos as Hale turned a 26-14 margin into a 55-38 lead going into the final quarter.

Hale had three players in double figures, led by Derrick Waller with 23.

The loss drops the Bronco boys to 4-8 overall.

By holding Andrew Kazikowski scoreless, and constantly changing up their defenses, Shoreland Lutheran pulled out a 51-43 win over Union Grove Saturday on Union Grove’s home court.

“It’s one we would have liked to have had,” head coach David Pettit said of the non-conference game.

Pettit said that Shoreland Lutheran showed a lot of different defenses throughout the game.

“That kept us on our toes, confused as a little bit and led to some turnovers,” Pettit said.

Even with those challenges, the Bronco boys were in this game until late in the fourth quarter.

Union Grove trailed 12-11 after one quarter, but grabbed a 22-19 lead at the half. The two teams were tied at 33 apiece after three quarters.

Early in the fourth, though, Shoreland Lutheran took advantage of some Bronco missed shots to grab a six-point lead. After that, the Broncos needed to foul to try to get back into the game. Shoreland Lutheran made 8 of 12 free throws, though, to put the game away.

Union Grove made only 17 of 54 shots from the floor. In addition, the boys only got to the free-throw line five times, sinking four; while Shoreland Lutheran was 14 of 24 from the foul line.

“We’re not real good at attacking the hoop,” Pettit said of his team’s failure to get to the free-throw line.

Alex Hale led the Bronco boys with 15 points.

“He had a double double,” Pettit said. “He had 10 rebounds so that was nice to see.”

Union Grove will host Southern Lakes Conference leader Wilmot on Friday, Jan. 11, at 7:45 p.m. Wilmot is undefeated in the SLC this season.

Next week, the boys will travel to Lake Geneva to take on Badger on Friday, Jan. 18, at 7:45 p.m.
