The Union Grove High School girls basketball team gave Wisconsin Lutheran (10-2 coming into the game) all it could handle Tuesday night before succumbing 52-46 in non-conference action on the Bronco home court.

Union Grove led 11-10 after one quarter and 22-20 at the half, before Lutheran took a slim 28-27 lead after three quarters.

A 24-19 Wisconsin Lutheran margin in the final period led to the final score.

Becca Maier led the Bronco girls with 12 points, as eight Broncos got into the scoring column.

The difference in this game came at the free-throw line where Wisconsin Lutheran sank 16 of 26 shots, and Union Grove 10 of 15.

The loss drops the Broncos to 5-7 overall this season. They are 3-3 in the Southern Lakes Conference.

Vs. Delavan-Darien

In an SLC game Jan. 8, the Broncos had little trouble with the Comets at Delavan-Darien. The result was a 43-27 SLC win.

“We did what we had to do,” head coach Rob Domagalski said. “It was a good win overall.”

The Broncos shot only 33 percent from the floor, and made just 10 of 24 free throws.

Becca Maier led Union Grove with 16 points.

Sarah Petrovic had a great game on the boards, pulling down a UGHS record 23 rebounds.

The Bronco girls held Delavan-Darien to just eight first half points, leading 10-3 after one quarter and 20-8 at the half. They expanded that lead to 33-20 after three quarters.

Vs. Wilmot

With less than three minutes to go in this SLC game against the No. 5-ranked Panthers on the Broncos home court, Union Grove trailed by just seven points and had the ball. The girls failed to convert on several opportunities with Wilmot coming away with a 15-point, 49-34, win Jan. 11.

“I thought we played well,” Domagalski said in the loss. “I’m very happy with our progress.”

Frankie Pettit led the Bronco girls with 11 points, and was the only Bronco in double figures.

Petrovic led the team with 16 rebounds.

“In two games, she had 39 rebounds,” Domagalski said. “That’s pretty impressive. She plays aggressive.”

Wilmot grabbed a 14-8 lead after one quarter, with Union Grove cutting it slightly to 23-18 at the half.

Wilmot, on the basis of a 14-7 margin in the third quarter, led 37-25, going into the fourth quarter. Union Grove cut the lead to seven in the fourth, but could get no closer.

Union Grove will travel to Lake Geneva on Friday, Jan. 18, for a 6 p.m. game against Badger.

Next week, the girls will host Elkhorn on Monday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m.

Both games are SLC matchups. Badger is 5-1 in the SLC and Elkhorn 2-4.
