With a 59-48 non-conference win over Racine Horlick Friday, the Burlington High School girls basketball team has put together a mini winning streak. The win was the second in a row for the team that has won just three games so far this season.

“We’re playing a lot better,” head coach Gordon Nikolic said. “We gotta try to keep it going.”

With the win, the Demons now stand at 3-10 overall. The girls are 1-6 in the Southern Lakes Conference.

Burlington held a narrow 8-6 lead after one quarter and expanded that to 21-16 at the half. The Demons still led by just five after three quarters – 35-30.

The fourth quarter was the deciding one in this game as the Demons put up 24 points to Horlick’s 18.

Horlick got within four points in the fourth quarter, but Lacey Scherrer hit a big three to put the lead back to seven.

Burlington shot 42 free throws in this game, knocking down 26 of them. In the fourth quarter, the Demons sank eight of 11 foul shots.

“We had a nice quarter shooting free throws,” Nikolic noted.

One reason for the number of free throws for the Demon girls is the increase confidence they have offensively.

“We’re actually getting to the basket, and drawing contact,” Nikolic said. “That was our best offensive game of the year. We shared the ball.”

Ashley Derks led the Demon girls with 14 points. Jenn Stevens added 12 points, and Emily Golon and Hailey Zwiebel each had nine.

Derks’ 14 points was a career high. In addition, she pulled down eight rebounds.

Of Stevens 12 points, most came at the free-throw line where she was seven of eight.
