It was one of those nights for the Lady Toppers when they traveled to Somers to play Shoreland Lutheran (11-5, 9-2 MCC) Jan. 24, losing 51-28.

“We just weren’t ready to play” said Coach Jeff Behrens. “We started off badly and it went downhill from there.”

Shoreland blew the doors off the Lady Toppers right from the start taking a 17-1 lead in the opening frame and finishing on top 23-5 after the first quarter.

Poor shooting and numerous turnovers combined with Shoreland’s intense solid play put Catholic Central in a hole that its couldn’t climb out of.

Though the game was pretty much decided in the first period, Catholic Central continued to battled the over next three quarters on a near even basis.

The Lady Toppers dropped the next three periods 28-23 much improved from the disastrous start.

Ali Wiemer led Catholic Central (2-13, 1-8) in scoring with 11 points, hitting  three three-pointers.

Kelsey Robers added nine points and Sophie Foote contributed seven points.

Shoreland’s Ellie Harmeyer had a game-high 23 points. Lauren Stanich was also in double figures with 14 points.

The Lady Toppers returned to action on Wednesday when they hosted conference leader The Prairie School (15-1, 10-1 MCC). Prairie is led by Gabrielle Ortiz, who is averaging 21.4 points per game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

On Friday Racine Lutheran will visit Catholic Central for a 7:30 contest.
