A busy stretch of games came to a successful conclusion Tuesday night – and as it turned out, gave the Burlington High School boys basketball team an added bonus.
The Demons beat Delavan-Darien 65-45 at Delavan Tuesday night. That win was supposed to set up Friday’s contest against Wilmot for the SLC title, but Wilmot lost 42-40 to Union Grove Tuesday night, ensuring BHS can do no worse than tie for the crown.
It was the third game in five days for the Demons, who went 2-1 in the stretch and played back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday. The Demons lost to Racine Case 68-49 Monday at the Bradley Center, and had to bounce back quickly.
“That’s exactly it,” said Berezowitz about the stretch of games coming to a conclusion with the title. “But not to be greedy, we don’t want to share a conference title.
“The kids still know what they have to do.”
Berezowitz said he knew going into Monday’s Case contest his team would have its hands full.
“You schedule these games in hopes that you don’t have letdowns,” the coach explained. “I knew Case was going to be phenomenal. I knew playing them on a big floor was probably a bad idea.
“We stayed with them for a half,” Berezowitz added. “Then we kind of wore down.”
BHS was outscored 43-25 in the second half by Case. Carson Biedrzycki led the Demons with 17 points, while Ty Dennis added 15.
Berezowitz was much happier with Tuesday’s game.
“I liked what our kids did (Tuesday),” the coach said. “We played everybody in the first half. We needed to.
“All 11 kids were in the rotation,” he added. “Our whole team came out tonight and battled.”
Nine of the 11 players scored, with Biedrzycki scoring 20, Jimmy Penzel 13 and Jay Essman 10.
BHS also beat Badger 63-57 on Friday. Biedrzycki led four players in double figures for the Demons with 18 points.
Penzel and Dennis added 12 points each, while Jake Reetz pitched in 10.
Dennis also had a team-high 10 rebounds, while Biedrzycki had four assists and Penzel, Dennis and Reetz two assists each.
The Demons will host the Panthers Friday at 7 p.m. The game will decide the final standings in the SLC, and a number of events will be going on at the game, including a t-shirt giveaway and a fundraiser for the victims of the Echo Lake Foods fire.
