In a meet that was postponed one week due to weather, the Union Grove High School boys golf team finished fifth out of eight teams at the Wolverine Classic April 12.

The event, which is normally 18 holes, was shortened to nine holes at the Rivermoor Golf Club in Waterford.

Waterford won the event, carding a 162. Union Grove tallied a 193.

“Overall, I was pleased with our performance, especially considering the conditions and the fact that we have not had much course time so far this year,” head coach Eric Swanson said.

Of the five Broncos on the course, two were freshmen and one a sophomore.

“For us to play as well as we did in our first event is promising,” Swanson added.

Sam Maier, a freshman, led Union Grove with a 45.

“He had a really steady round and showed a lot of potential out there,” Swanson said.

Junior Tom Kwon and senior Steve Peterson carded a 47 and 48, respectively.

“(They) overcame slow starts to post decent scores,” Swanson said.

Sam Maier’s brother, Ben, another freshman, finished out the team scoring with a 53. Sophomore Brendon Belognia fired a 60.

“I saw a lot of good things from the team,” Swanson said.

SLC boys major No. 1

The Broncos participated in the Southern Lakes Conference Boys Golf Major No. 1 Tuesday, also at Rivermoor Golf Club.

On this day, the golfers put in 18 holes on the par-70 Rivermoor course.

This time, Union Grove had a more difficult day, placing eighth out of the eight teams with a 396. Waterford won the event, carding a 336.

Kwon led the Bronco boys with a 96, shooting a 49 on the front nine, and a 47 on the back nine.

Peterson’s 47-51 put him just two strokes back of Kwon with a 98.

Sam and Ben Maier each shot 101s to finish out the team scoring.

Belongia’s 111 did not count toward the team score.

On Saturday, the Broncos will participate in the Milton Scramble played at Bonny Meade Golf Links.

Next week, the SLC Boys Golf Major No. 2 will be played at Delbrook Golf Course, Delavan, on Tuesday, April 23.
