Wolverines take third at Cougar Relays event

Although head coach Jerry Glisch would have liked to have seen either one of his track and field squads finish higher than third Friday at the Cougar Relays, he noted that the teams his Wolverines finished behind – Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker – have very strong programs and are tough to beat.

The Waterford High School track and field squads both took third at the Cougar Relays held at Janesville Craig High School. The Wolverine girls tallied 102 points to finish just six points behind Parker and 12 points behind Craig.

The boys’ squad had 91 points to finish nine points behind Parker and 21 points behind Craig.

What does Glisch emphasize to his squads at relays such as these?

“Every one-quarter of an inche counts, every .01 of a second counts, because it all ends up when added together,” Glisch said, noting that these relays truly show the depth of a team.

The Wolverine girls won three events, the 4-by-100 relay, the high jump relay, and the 800 sprint medley. The 800 sprint medley includes two 100-meter races, a 200 and a 400.

Glisch called this 800 sprint medley “one of the best races I’ve seen all year.”

After the two 100s, and the 200, Jenny Gilbreath received the baton and was probably 25 meters behind the leader. With still 100 meters to go, and running into a strong headwind, Gilbreath was, Glisch estimated, 10-15 meters behind. She ended up with the win.

“She just absolutely outmuscled and outpowered the other girl,” Glisch said.

Waterford had three girls in the top five of the high jump relay. Holly Neubauer, Valerie Knurr and Sarah Edson all cleared 4 feet 8 inches to finish third, fourth and fifth.

“That kind of epitomizes the approach we want to take,” Glisch said. “It’s all about consistency.”

The Wolverine boys won the 3-by-110-meter shuttle hurdles, the shot put relay and the discus throw relay.

Brandon Miller had the longest individual throw in the shot put with a heave of 49 feet 2.5 inches. Brandon Schindler was third at 45-10.25 and Aleksandr Henderson eight with 40-06.5.

In the discus, Henderson was third with a throw of 126-11, Miller fifth with a throw of 114-08 and Schindler seventh with a throw of 109-11.

On Tuesday, the Wolverines competed in their own Waterford Invitational. Results were not available at deadline.

Waterford will compete in the New Berlin West Invitational today.
