It’s been a busy week for the Union Grove baseball team.

Like every other team in the area, the Broncos had a batch of games in a short period of time in order to make up games cancelled because of the weather.

On April 24, Union Grove defeated Badger 8-1, then swept Westosha Central in a doubleheader. The Broncos won the first game 8-1, and the second 20-1.

On Friday, UG dropped a 4-1 decision to Racine Lutheran/Prairie in a non-conference game, then lost to Lake Geneva Badger Saturday 7-1.

On Monday, the Broncos beat Racine St. Catherine’s 11-3, and then downed Elkhorn 5-0 on Tuesday.

With the 5-2 run, Union Grove improved to 8-7 overall.

In the first game against Badger, Bart Bohat struck out five and walked two for the complete-game victory.

“Bart threw a great game,” said UG coach Michael Arendt.

In the sweep of Westosha, Union Grove got strong pitching efforts from Ben Miller (10K, 6BB in a complete-game outing in the first game) and Ryan Maier (four innings in the five-inning second game).

Against Lutheran/Prairie on Friday, Arendt said his team played solidly, but didn’t take advantage of the opportunities it had to win.

“We left 13 guys on base, and really couldn’t get a key hit,” Arendt said. “They made every play when we put it in play, so you have to give them credit for that.”

On Saturday against Badger, the Broncos fell behind early against Badger.

“We swung it better, but everything we hit hard was right at someone,” Arendt said. “We gave them a couple of runs early on errors and they took advantage of them.

“Grant Beck threw really well in relief, and kept us in the game, but we were unable to close the gap.”

The Broncos were scheduled to play at Elkhorn Thursday, and then host Delavan-Darien Monday at 4:30 p.m. – and travel to Delavan Tuesday for a game at the same time.
