After a loss to Wilmot May 8, the Waterford High School baseball team bounced back with wins over Racine Park Monday and Lake Geneva Badger Tuesday. The team’s overall record now stands at 8-11, and their Southern Lakes Conference mark is 5-7.

Vs. Badger

A 5-4 victory Tuesday at home against SLC foe Badger came about in a most unlikely fashion.

“Waterford scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh on no hits,” head coach Lance Bestland noted. “We won on a walk-off base on balls.”

Badger had taken a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Waterford got one run in the bottom of the fourth, but still trailed 4-1 going into its last at-bat. They pushed four runs across, though, without the benefit of a hit to get the surprising victory. All four of the seventh-inning runs were unearned.

Lake Geneva outhit Waterford 8-3, but also committed five errors, leading to all five of Waterford’s runs.

One of Badger’s four runs was also unearned, but the Wolverines played otherwise solid defensive ball, committing just one error.

Trace Hunsucker had two hits in this game, a run scored and an RBI. Tanner Hunsucker had the other Waterford hit.

Ross Gunderson and Jacob Schuyler also had RBIs.

Waterford did work the Badger pitcher for seven walks, which helped in the seventh-inning rally.

Vs. Racine Park

The Wolverine boys jumped on Park quickly in this non-conference tilt by scoring five runs in the top of the first. Waterford added four runs in the third, and four more in the fourth to take a 13-0 lead.

Park scored five runs in its half of the fourth, but the Wolverines came right back with five runs in the fifth in the 18-5 win played at Racine Horlick.

Waterford banged out 12 hits, and also benefited from six walks and five Park errors.

Yiannis Skapinakis led the Wolverines offensively with two hits and four RBIs.

Jesse Bouffiou and Schuyler each had three hits in this game. Gunderson added two. Trace Hunsucker added two RBIs.

Vs. Wilmot

Waterford could muster little offense in a 6-1 loss to Wilmot.

Wilmot jumped to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first and never trailed.

Waterford’s sole run came in the fourth on an RBI double by Ryan Ratkovec that drove in Bouffiou.

The Panthers outhit the Wolverines 10-3 in this game, and had just one error to Waterford’s two.
