In the tough Southern Lakes Conference, the Waterford High School boys and girls track and field squads managed a third- and fourth-place finish, respectively, at the SLC Meet held Tuesday at Waterford.
The Wolverine boys tallied 124.5 points to take third, while the girls accumulated 108.33 points to finish fourth.
Lake Geneva Badger won both sides of the meet.
The boys squad took three event titles, while the girls captured two.
For the Wolverine boys, Collin Chart won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.88 seconds. Chart was also second in the 300 hurdles (42.96).
Alek Henderson won the discus with a throw of 137 feet six inches, while Brandon Miller took the top spot in the shot put with a heave of 51-08.
Brandon Schindler took second in the shot put (50-08) to give Waterford a 1-2 finish in that event and 18 points.
Also placing second for the boys were Grant Brooks in the 3,200 (10:23.03), Cal Jaskie in the long jump (19-06) and Michael Dilley in the triple jump (40-07.25).
The boys added three more third-place finishes and three fourths.
The Wolverine boys scored the most points in the 110 hurdles with 19 (Chart first, Gabriel Gasiorowski fourth and Jerome Sindberg fifth).
The Wolverine girls got wins from Jenny Gilbreath in the long jump (17-03.75) and from the 4-by-100 relay team of Samantha Dziak, Halle Ludtke, Samantha Jahnke and Natalie Erickson (52.82).
Gilbreath also took second in the 100 (12.78), the 200 (26.46) and the 400 (59.75).
In addition, the girls’ squad had four thirds and two fourths.
The girls tallied 18 points in the 200 with Gilbreath second, Hannah Zimmerman third and Valerie Knurr fifth.
They had 17 points in the 100 (Gilbreath second, Zimmeman third and Knurr sixth), and 17 points in the long jump (Gilbreath first, Knurr third and Hannah Michalowski eighth).
Richmond/Erickson Invitational
At the Richmond/Erickson Invitational held at Wauwatosa West Friday, the Wolverine girls placed third and the boys fifth.
“We did well,” head coach Jerry Glisch said. “There were a lot of good teams there. It’s a good tune-up meet for us.”
Glisch added that the Wolverines were missing a few of their top athletes, especially on the boys side.
The girls’ squad tallied 131.50 points to finish just 19.5 points behind winner Wisconsin Lutheran.
Senior Jenny Gilbreath led the Wolverine girls, winning the 400-meter dash in 59.79 seconds and placing second in the 200 in 26.31. Both were personal bests for Gilbreath.
“It was a breakout meet for Jenny,” Glisch said. “I thought she did a fantastic job.”
Glisch added that Gilbreath had been attacking her 400 very well, but changed that on Friday.
Sophomore Hannah Zimmerman won the 100, and finished fourth in the 200.
“She is looking more impressive every week,” Glisch said.
Waterford also got a win in the high jump with Holly Neubauer coming out on top by clearing the bar at 4 feet 8 inches.
The Wolverine girl who actually scored the most team points was junior Valerie Knurr. She was third in the 100, tied for third in the high jump, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 200. That means that Knurr accounted for 19.5 team points.
Other top-three finishes included Hannah Jost, second in the 1,600; and Jessica Krupinski, third in the 3,200.
The 4-by-200 and 4-by-800 relay teams were second.
The Wolverine boys got wins from senior Grant Brooks in the 3,200 (9:59.96) and junior Aleksandr Henderson in the discus (138-05). Henderson also took third in the shot put.
Glisch noted that Brooks time was his first ever under 10 minutes in the 3,200.
The only other top-three finish was by sophomore Justin Gresk in the discus.
