In the regular season-ending Southern Lakes Conference Meet Tuesday, the Union Grove High School boys golf team simply could not keep up with the other SLC squads, finishing eighth at the Hawk’s View Golf Course, Lake Geneva.

The Bronco boys shot a team total 402 in the tournament won by Waterford with a 326.

Only two Bronco golfers broke 100 on the par-72 course. Ben Maier was the low Bronco with a 91, shooting a 45 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine. That was 23rd overall.

Burlington’s Brian Dankle was meet medalist with a 79.

Tom Kwon was the other Bronco below 100, with a 98 (50-48).

Steve Peterson carded a 106, Justin Schuster a 107 and Karsten Acker a 115. Only the four lowest scores count toward the team total.

Brown’s Lake Rider Cup

The Bronco boys could not escape the bottom spot in this 10-team event either, finishing with a 268 team total. Burlington won the event with a 228.

Played at the Brown’s Lake Golf Course, Burlington, the event features a modified format with the first six holes a scramble, the next six best ball, and final six a modified alternate shot. Each squad fields three two-person teams.

“I think the kids like the different format especially at this time of the season,” head coach Eric Swanson said. “The conditions were pretty tough. The wind was really howling which caused a lot of trouble.”

Union Grove had two teams fire an 84. They were Sam and Ben Maier, and Tom Kwon and Sam Larson.

“Both of those groups could have done better,” Swanson said. “They just struggled on a couple of holes.”

Schuster and Acker carded a 100.
