Carding its best 18-hole team score of the season by 15 strokes, the Union Grove High School boys golf team finished ninth at the WIAA Division 1 Janesville Craig regional played Tuesday at Glen Erin Golf Course in Janesville.

With a 365 team score, the Broncos were 37 strokes better than their score at the Southern Lakes Conference Meet one week earlier.

“Today was by far our best team score of the year,” head coach Eric Swanson said. “It was one of the few times this year where we had all of our varsity team playing on the same day, which helped.”

Freshman Ben Maier led Union Grove with an 89, followed by senior Steve Peterson with a 91.

Junior Tom Kwon’s 92 and freshman Sam Maier’s 93 finished out the team scoring.

Freshman Justin Schuster was the fifth Bronco golfer and he carded a 109. That score did not count toward the team score.

“Overall, we played pretty well,” Swanson said. “The back nine at Glen Erin gets a little tighter and we struggled a little with that. Our putting also wasn’t as it could have been, as well.

“Even though it was our best round, all the players felt that they could have done better. It was a good way to end the season, though.”

Swanson noted it is important for the team members to devote their off season to getting better.

“Our returning players didn’t work a lot on their games in the off season, and it showed at times,” Swanson said.

With four returning varsity members and all of the JV members returning, he is hopeful the team will devote time in the off season to getting better and can be more competitive next year.
