Competing in three races at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday, Union Grove High School junior Cassy Goodrich had her best finish in the 400-meter race.

In that competition, Goodrich finished second, breaking her own UGHS record with a time of 56.05 seconds.

The state championships were held at La Crosse.

The state champion, Hannah Rohde of Waukesha West, set a state record in that race with a time of 54.92 seconds.

Head coach Joe Busalacchi noted that Goodrich was third coming down the home stretch, but was able to make a move and secure second.

“She ran a great race,” Busalacchi said.

Goodrich finished sixth in the 200 with a time of 25.70 seconds. That meant she was also on the podium in that event.

The final event for Goodrich was the 100 where she placed eighth with a time of 12.76 seconds.

“You can’t really ask for much more out of her,” Busalacchi said.

Another junior, Madelyn Schwartz, competed in the 800 and placed 12th overall. Schwartz turned in a time of 2:20.78, which was a personal record for her.

Freshman Alex Goodrich ran in the 300 hurdles and finished 15th in 47.85 seconds, a personal best for her.

“She had the fastest time at the state meet for a freshman hurdler,” Busalacchi said.

Busalacchi emphasized that his assistant coaches did an outstanding job with the Bronco track and field athletes this season.

“The potential that we have is awesome,” Busalacchi said. “You have to start big picture thinking – what can you do at the state meet?”

In addition to having the Goodrich sisters back next year, and Schwartz, Busalacchi noted that his 4×200 boys relay team was only a bad handoff away from a trip to state this season. He expects big things from that relay team next year.

In addition, the school’s new track will be finished for next season, which will also aid the growth of the team. This year, the boys and girls squads had no track and field area to practice on.
