The Union Grove Union High School baseball team found out the hard way last week just how dangerous a team peaking at the right time can be.

The Wilmot Panthers – who went on Tuesday to win a trip to state – overcame the third-seeded Broncos 4-3 in eight innings at Union Grove May 30.

Union Grove finished the season 17-10, and were co-champions in the Southern Lakes Conference with Badger at 11-3.

“It is a disappointing finish, but this one game does not take away from all the accomplishments the team earned this year,” said UG coach Michael Arendt. “They are a close-knit group of kids and it was a fun year.”

Union Grove led the game after two innings, 2-0, and was up 3-0 before Wilmot scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the sixth, Wilmot added another run to tie the score, chasing Ben Miller from the game. Bart Bohat came on and finished the game, giving up two hits and the final run.

Union Grove finished with just four hits in the game – one each by Mason Rodriguez, Matt Kupper, Zac Melendrez and Zach Borowski – and committed two errors.

Graduating are three members of the team – Bohat, Adam Filz and Ryan Maier.

“Our three seniors will be missed,” Arendt said.
