As far as games going, Sept. 30 is probably something the Waterford Union High School football team will want to treasure – and the Union Grove Broncos would like to forget.

In the rivalry game between the two schools, Waterford scored pretty much on every possession it had, punting just once in the game and cruising to a 49-0 halftime lead and a 61-6 win at Union Grove.

The Broncos dropped to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the SLC, while Waterford improved to 7-1 and 5-1 in the SLC. The Wolverines remain a game back in the SLC standings, as Badger defeated Elkhorn.

The statistics were lopsided in Waterford’s favor. The Wolverines finished with 17 first downs, while Union Grove had eight. Waterford also finished with 271 rushing yards to 148 for the Broncos, and 70 passing yards to 17.

The Wolverines scored on two long runs in the first quarter – one by Dylan Dessart and one by Jordan Underly – and quarterback Zach Fisher closed out the quarter with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Underly.

In the second quarter, the Wolverines scored four touchdowns. The first two came on rushes by Greg Steffens and Underly, and the second two on touchdown passes by Fisher.

Dustin Schindler and Kody Azarian each pulled in a touchdown pass, and Nick Wirsching was perfect on the extra points to put the score at 49-0.

Waterford added two more scores in the third quarter. Reserve running back David Welch scored on a 32-yard run, while Alex Thomaschek picked off a pass by Union Grove’s J.K. Witkofski and returned it for a score.

Witkofski connected on just five of 12 passes for 17 yards as the Waterford defense clamped down. All eight of Union Grove’s first downs came on running plays, and Kyle Boeck got the Broncos on the board at the 9:51 mark of the fourth quarter, scoring from 23 yards out.

The point-after kick failed, leaving the final at 61-6.

Both Waterford and Union Grove are celebrating homecoming this week. The Broncos host Badger at 7 p.m. tonight, while Waterford hosts Delavan-Darien.

The Badgers are undefeated in the Southern Lakes right now, while Delavan-Darien is one of three teams with a 4-1 record – along with Waterford and Wilmot.

No one else in the SLC has more than one victory.
