First COVID-19 death reported in Racine County

Racine County on Friday logged its first death related to the coronavirus.

The Central Racine County Health Department announced Friday afternoon that a man in his 70s died as a result of complications of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus.

“We are so saddened by this death and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and community,” said Margaret Gesner, Health Officer for the Central Racine County Health Department. “Our health department continues to work tirelessly and employ all possible resources to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus and its impact on our community.”

The Central Racine County Health Department did not specify where the man lived, but the agency serves the city and town of Burlington, Caledonia, Dover, Mt. Pleasant, North Bay, Norway, Raymond, Rochester, Sturtevant, Union Grove, village and town of Waterford, and Yorkville.

At least 37 people have died statewide because of the disease, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

“Today is a heartbreaking day for all of Racine County. We send our deepest condolences to his family members and friends, and our hearts are with all those who are battling this extremely dangerous disease,” Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave said in a news release. “Racine County continues to fully support public health and other partner agencies to do all we can to combat COVID-19 in our communities, and the Emergency Operations Center and Joint Information Center are providing additional resources.”

As of 3 p.m. Friday, April 3, there were 46 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Racine County and 1,916 confirmed cases statewide.

“The actual number of cases is much higher,” said Gesner. “For every person who tests positive for the disease, there are likely many more people infected with mild symptoms who will not be tested due to current testing capacity. We urge all residents to comply with the ‘Safer-at-Home’ order and continue to practice good hygiene to avoid exposure to the COVID-19 virus.”
