In this week’s Standard Press…

All the peace and goodwill of the holidays does necessarily mean the roads are safer for motorists on their way to a family Christmas or New Year’s celebration.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Department is in the midst of its annual holiday Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown and on Christmas Eve deputies responded to two crashes that are the result of suspected impaired driving.

A story on the crashes is among the front-page articles in this week’s edition of the Burlington Standard Press. The newspaper will be available at local retail outlets on Friday. Subscribers will receive their copies with Friday’s mail delivery.

Here’s a look at some of the other stories in this week’s edition:

  • TRADITION TRANSCENDS GENERATIONS: Ashley Bzdawka said she cannot imagine doing anything other than participating in the 51st annual Christmas in the Barn event in the Town of Dover. Bzdawka, of the Waterford area, has been involved in the traditional Christmas Eve live Nativity scene since she was an infant and now she has children of her own who, like her, played the role of Jesus.
  • MUNICIPAL FEES UPDATED: The City of Burlington updated its fee schedule for city services and permits during a Dec. 17 Common Council meeting. Among the new fees are ambulance services and bond expenses for landscaping projects.
  • VOICE OF DEMOCRACY: Anika Preusker acknowledges the nation’s polarizing climate and wants people to have a positive perspective on “What Makes America Great.” Preusker, a Burlington High School sophomore, highlighted the positive points in an award-winning Voice of Democracy speech she submitted to contest sponsor Anderson-Murphy VFW Post 2823.
  • LONGTIME COACH HONORED: It’s never a bad idea to honor a legend. Longtime Burlington boys basketball coach Jerry Hill got his night last Friday, thanks to current coach Steve Berezowitz and a host of former players.
