Burlington

In this week’s Standard Press…

With scenes that would have been right at home in a science fiction movie, voters on Tuesday braved the threat of coronavirus to cast ballots processed in many cases by poll workers in full protective garb – gowns, gloves, masks and face shields.

It was an election unlike any other and it became a reality a little more than 12 hours earlier when the state Supreme Court overturned a late effort by Gov. Tony Evers to reschedule the election to June.

While election officials had urged people to vote by absentee ballot for the past month, those who didn’t had a choice to make: Stay home or risk catching or spreading COVID-19 by going to the polls.

Coverage of the unique election dominates this week’s edition of the Burlington Standard Press. We have reaction from local election officials and voters along with on-the-scene accounts of the day.
