Musical runs through the weekend at school

For Catholic Central Theater Association Director Abby Galstad there’s something about “Sister Act” that fits like a glove.
Maybe it’s the fact that it’s presented at a school that was founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame 100 years ago. Or more likely it’s because it’s a story of renewed faith that will coincide with the Catholic Church’s run up to Easter.
“I love a story of redemption,” Galstad said Tuesday. “She (main character Deloris Van Cartier) went to a convent to hide and ended up finding God.”
Catholic Central’s presentation of the musical, which is based on the 1992 film of the same name, opens Thursday and runs through Sunday in the school’s theater, 148 McHenry St., Burlington.
Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $14 and are available online through the Catholic Central High School website at catholiccentralhs.org.
While the show is based on the film, the music has completely changed in the stage version, according to Galstad. The score is by Alan Menken, a Tony- and Oscar-winning writer.
“It’s a totally new score and it’s brilliant,” Galstad said.
The show is filled with powerful gospel music, lively dancing and a moving story, according to Galstad.
“Deloris finds her way back to her faith with her relationships with the sisters,” she said.
While the play is set in a convent, it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
“It pokes fun at Catholics in the best way,” Galstad said.
