Waterford’s ‘Shrek’ has message of empowerment for misfits

Waterford Union High School students in music and dance will bring to life the familiar tale of a curmudgeonly ogre and his quest for a little peace and quiet that instead leads to the discovery of his true self.

The school’s production of “Shrek: the Musical” debuted Thursday and runs through the weekend.

The show is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday at Waterford High School, 100 Field Drive.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. They are available through the school district office at 262-534-9059.

“To be honest, this production has been no small feat, and countless hours have been put in in all aspects of production,” Director Leah Birmingham said. “(Music Directors) Derek Machan and Mike Nelson have worked so hard to bring the musical score to life, and this show has one of the largest pit orchestras I have seen in my time at WUHS.”

The results, however, have been worth the effort, according to Birmingham.

She said the show itself sounds phenomenal, with “impeccable vocals” by Zach Wagner and Willow Causey in the lead roles, and a show-stopping number sung by Saryna Guajardo as the dragon.

“The entirety of the cast has really embraced their fairy tale personas, and have taken the core theme of the show to heart – embrace who you are, and let your freak flag fly,” Birmingham said.
