VERONICA LANCASTER

Veronica “Vera” Lancaster, 104, of Burlington, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 in Aurora at Home Hospice at Aurora Medical Center in Burlington.

Vera was born on Jan. 9, 1916 to William and Leonie Seng in San Antonio, Texas. She was a proud Texan to the very end.

Vera married Charles E. Lancaster, Jr. on April 24, 1939 in San Antonio, who was in the Army Air Corps at the time. Because of Charles’ Air Force career, the family moved many times, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington D.C., Connecticut, Virginia, Maine, Texas, Japan and Wisconsin. Vera was responsible for the maintenance and organization of all their locations and their four children.

The family moved to Burlington in 1958 as Col. Lancaster was commissioned to be the Wing Commander for Richard E. Bong Air Force Base. Vera became a part of the community in that she was a candy striper at Burlington Memorial Hospital, joined St. John the Divine Episcopal Church and worked on the flower guild for the church. She joined the Burlington Women’s Club and was the oldest active member until her passing.

Vera loved to play bridge and golf, and did so until her 90’s. She was a ferocious reader of books, especially James Patterson and her weekly People Magazine. She loved playing Dominos, enjoyed a vodka and tonic and ate ice cream every evening. Vera especially loved being with her family and was a part of most family occasions.

Vera is survived by her children, Sharon Boldt of California, Charlene Kacena of Florida, Stephanie (Fred) Foreman of Illinois, and Charles (Julie) Lancaster III of California; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles Eugene Lancaster, Jr. and brother, Clement Seng.

The family is very grateful to her wonderful caregivers Mary, Lori, Heather, Joan and Carol.

Donations in Vera’s name can be made to Aurora at Home Hospice or St. John the Divine Episcopal Church.

Memorial services have been postponed due to health and family travel concerns related to the COVID-19 virus. Services will be held at a later date.
