It was a successful week for the Union Grove High School wrestling squad, as the boys went 4-2 in dual action.

The Broncos were 4-1 at the Kenosha Christian Life Invitational Saturday, but lost to Wilmot two days earlier in Southern Lakes Conference action.

Overall, the team is now 5-7 in dual meets, and 0-2 in the SLC.

KCL invitational

“It went pretty well,” head coach Andy Weis said of his team’s efforts at KCL. “Overall, a pretty successful day. Hopefully, we can do that again Saturday (at the Beloit Turner invitational).”

The Bronco boys defeated Cudahy 61-9 in the opening round, followed that up with a 69-9 win over Shoreland Lutheran and a 48-36 win over Chicago King.

The only loss came in round four when Union Grove was defeated by KCL 50-21.

“I don’t think we match up very well with them,” Weis said of the loss to KCL.

In round five, the Broncos came back to edge Greenfield 39-37.

This win over Greenfield came down to the last match involving 182-pounder Jack McCann. McCann lost the match by a 7-4 decision, but only a pin would have spelled defeat for the Broncos. A technical fall would have created a tie.

“He was even in position to win the match,” Weis said of McCann.

Brett Kieslich (at 120 pounds), Adam Braley (195) and Cole Ryan (220) all went 5-0 on the day.

Todd Willms (170) and Tony Beck (285) were 4-1.

KCL won the invitational going 5-0 on the day.

Wilmot dual

On Dec. 6, the Bronco boys traveled to Wilmot and were handed a 45-21 loss by the Panthers in SLC action.

The match was closer than the score indicates as Union Grove won six of the 14 individual matches. The difference was that seven of Wilmot’s eight wins came by pin, while only one of the Broncos six wins came by that means. The other five victories were all by decision.

“I thought the kids wrestled well,” Weis said. “We’re still young.”

Weis added that one of the things his young grapplers have to learn is to stay off their backs. The Broncos were ahead in a couple other matches before getting pinned.

The best match of the day probably came at 285 where Beck defeated Wilmot’s Zach Dodge 5-2.

“Tony was able to secure a couple of takedowns and get the win,” Weis said. “It was another good win for Tony.”

Other Bronco boys who won were Kieslich (120), Nick Bonczkowski (160), Tate Koester (182), Braley (195) and Ryan (220). Ryan was the Bronco who got the pin.

Union Grove took on Elkhorn at Elkhorn Thursday in an SLC dual.

On Saturday, the boys will participate in the Beloit Turner Invitational.

Next week, the Broncos will host Westosha Central on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m.
