Whoever coined the phrase “lightning never strikes the same place twice” hasn’t watched the Burlington and Waterford boys basketball teams play this year.

For the second time in as many games, the Demons used an impressive defensive effort in the second quarter to limit the Wolverines to just four points en route to a 67-44 victory.

Burlington is now 7-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference and 9-5 overall. Union Grove remains a game back after beating Westosha Central 69-54 Friday night. The two teams play next Thursday at Union Grove.

For Burlington, Friday night’s game was eerily similar to what happened when the Demons traveled to Waterford in December. The Wolverines came out and scored early and often, and led 15-11 after the opening quarter.

But in the second, the Wolverines couldn’t score until 1:30 was left in the half, and managed just two field goals from Zach Fisher in the quarter. By then, Burlington led 30-15, and it was 30-19 at the half.

“I think they scored on their first five possesions,” said BHS coach Steve Berezowitz. “I thought we did a really nice job of kind of sticking to it and kind of weathering the storm a little bit.

“I was really proud of our guys.”

Carson Biedrzycki led the Demons with four 3-pointers and 22 points, while Eric Gerber added 14 points and Ty Dennis 11. Nick Reda had nine assists, two steals and seven points for BHS.

Waterford was led by Greg Steffens’ 10 points. No one else was in double figures.

For Union Grove in the win over Westosha, Brett Van Vreede led four Union Grove players in double figures with 19. Matt Herndon and Grayson Catania added 12 each and Matt Wolff 11.

Catholic Central hosted the Prairie School of Racine Friday night, and won 69-54 in overtime. The Hilltoppers led by seven going into the final quarter before Prairie tied up the game and sent it to overtime.

Abel Wagner led the Hilltoppers with 16 points, while Rayce Wadsworth added 15.
