A first quarter in which the Union Grove High School boys basketball team struggled to put the ball in the net on their home court, led to a 16-6 deficit that that Bronco boys were unable to overcome in a 57-41 loss to Wilmot Jan. 11.

“They got up 10 pretty quick,” head coach David Pettit noted. “Their press frustrated us.”

Pettit added that Wilmot held Union Grove’s two leading scorers – Andrew Kazikowski and Alex Hale – to just eight points total.

Leading the way for the Bronco boys was Grant Beck, who had 12 points.

“He’s pretty athletic,” Pettit said. “He’s been giving us more of an inside presence. He can jump out of the gym. He’s fun to watch.”

Cody Walters added 10.

Union Grove trailed 28-16 at the half and 41-30 after three quarters.

The Bronco boys went to the free-throw line only seven times in this game, sinking five. Wilmot was nine of 11.

The loss drops the Broncos to 4-9 overall, and 2-4 in the Southern Lakes Conference. Wilmot improved to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the SLC.

Union Grove will play at Lake Geneva Badger on Friday, Jan. 18, at 7:45 p.m. in an SLC matchup.

Next week, they will be at Delavan-Darien on Tuesday, Jan. 22, for a 7 p.m. SLC game and at Westosha Central on Friday, Jan. 25, for a 7:30 p.m. SLC matchup.

Badger is 1-5 in the SLC, Delavan-Darien 0-6, and Westosha Central 2-5.
