A win over Lake Geneva Badger Thursday means the Burlington High School wrestling team has defeated two of the three teams head coach Jade Gribble felt were contenders for a conference title prior to the start of the season.

The Demon grapplers defeated Delavan-Darien 56-15 Dec. 1, and then handed Badger a 39-30 loss Thursday. The third contending team – Wilmot – Burlington will face Thursday, Dec. 15.

The win over Badger gives Burlington a 2-0 record overall and in Southern Lakes Conference action.

“The score was close, but we really kind of dominated in the kids getting nine out of 14 matches,” Gribble said. “It was a pretty intense dual.”

Five of the Demons nine wins were by decision, with the other four coming by pin, while all five of Badger’s wins were by pin.

Gribble said the three biggest wins for Burlington came at 195, 113 and 120.

At 195, sophomore Greg Miller, who was trailing in the first period, battled back for a 9-5 win.

At 113, freshman Ben Hornickle scored an 8-5 win. Gribble said Hornickle controlled the match while giving up some weight.

“He really did just a great job,” Gribble said.

At 120, another freshman – Lucas Shenkenberg – pinned his opponent in 2 minutes 51 seconds. That gave Burlington a 33-30 lead.
