Shellshocked.

That was the feeling of the Burlington High School girls’ basketball team after the first quarter of its non-conference matchup at Franklin Friday.

After defeating Racine Horlick three days earlier by 33 points, the Demon girls were feeling pretty good about themselves. That was until a disastrous first quarter erased those good feelings.

With Franklin hitting nearly every shot they took, and Burlington unable to buy a basket, Franklin pounded the Demon girls by exploding to a 35-2 lead after one quarter.

“We didn’t play very well and they’re a very good team,” noted head coach Gordon Nikolic. “I hope it was good for us in the long run.”

Franklin’s Jenny Eickhorst scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter, including five three-pointers. Cassidy Mihalko had 10 of her 21 points in that quarter.

At the half, Franklin expanded its lead to 54-12. Burlington trailed 63-26 after three periods. Franklin ended up winning the game 78-34.

The Demons made just eight of 53 shots (15 percent) from the floor. They did much better at the free throw line, sinking 14 of 23.

Nikolic noted that as Franklin jumped out to a big lead his team began to force their shots, taking poor shots in the process.
